Each leg of a relay is completed by a different member of a team. The runners must exchange the baton within a designated changeover zone. This box is usually located 10 metres before and after the start of each subsequent leg. The outgoing athlete must hold the baton high in the air and may make a verbal signal to the incoming runner (eg, “stick!”) to indicate that they are close to the changeover zone.
